Discovering Platform Tennis- Part 1

Growing up, I went to High School in Convent Station NewJersey. I took the train to school from Short Hills station everyday. As I waited for the train each morning, I would stare across the street and wonder what those "mini tennis courts" were. My college days revolved around sports; field hockey, intramural "Banshee" softball and volleyball. As the years went on, so did marriage and kids, but my craving for sports never stopped. My husband and I enjoyed staying active by playing golf and tennis and eventually joined Mendham Golf and Tennis Club, in Mendham, New Jersey. When we signed up for golf and tennis membership they offered us the opportunity to join "platform tennis" as well. We heard it was a fun, social, winter sport " sort of like tennis" so we signed up! My first time on the paddle court was so much fun I couldn't wait to go back. Our Club had a women's paddle team that was in the NJWPTL ( New Jersey Women's Platform Tennis League) that I quickly joined. Mendham had three teams, and I was on the bottom court of the weakest team. That didn't matter! I wanted to learn the sport and getter better fast! One of my first away matches was at The Racquets Club in Short Hills, New Jersey. Yes, believe it or not, I found myself playing Platform Tennis ( or as we say, "paddle tennis") on those very courts I used to stare at from the train station in my high school years. Now, I understood what those mini tennis courts were all abou...

Viking Low Bounce Balls

Platform tennis is a sport played primarily in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States. Due to the solid rubber core construction of a normal platform ball which produces a lively bounce during the cold winter months, this same ball becomes too fast and hard to control when the weather gets warm or in high altitude conditions. Today, Viking is proud to announce the introduction of a new formula that combines the current construction of the Extra Duty ball with the feel and performance athletes expect from a normal platform tennis ball. Viking, known as a leading innovator of platform tennis equipment, has been the Official Ball of all American Platform Tennis Association (APTA) National Championships since 1999. The brand raised the bar on overall ball quality in 2011 by introducing its Extra Duty Yellow ball for a more consistent bounce and longer lasting performance. This year, Viking expanded the line, as Pink and Orange colors were brought back by popular demand. Now, introducing the Low Bounce ball establishes Viking as the brand with the most extensive line of balls in sport. “This revolutionary move by Viking clearly demonstrates the brand’s commitment to growing the sport and developing new innovative products which make the game easier and more fun to play” notes Scott Winters, Vice President, Indoor and Paddle Sports at Prince. Winters continues, “This ball has been in development for over two years and it hasn’t been easy keeping this project a sec...

Platform Tennis Fun

Platform tennis gives players a way to continue their game no matter what the weather, location, or overall conditions may be. Paddle tennis can be played indoors or outdoors, during the summer and winter, without having to worry about slippery and icy courts, or the rays of the sun burning down on the players.

Platform tennis is not only entertaining, it gives us a chance to become physically fit and to compete against other enthusiasts, while at the same time, have fun and show our skill with the paddle. It is a sport that is full of action, fast movement, lightning speed and can be played by people of all ages, regardless of their physical condition.

While platform tennis professionals take their sport very seriously, and can be extremely competitive, amateurs enjoy the quick pace it tends to offer and the possibility of enjoying a one on one game with new or old friends. Children also love the joy of playing against each other or against a grandparent, which helps to create more quality time with the family while exercising at the same time.

Platform tennis is also a way to improve your overall health, and will help you burn off those extra pounds. Similar to other sports, you can form local teams and leagues, which will in turn become a fun way to motivate each other to beco...

Wonderful Platform Tennis

Platform Tennis is a wonderful game for all seasons. Platform Tennis or Paddle as enthusiast often call it answered the question how do we continue to enjoy racquet sports even when there is snow and ice on the ground. The answer was simple, but shows the dedication these founders had to a sporting life. Raise the game off the ground, place it on a platform and add heaters underneath. The heating system being under the court wasn't to keep the players warm it was to melt the ice common to New York winters and keep the playing surface fit for play.

The playing court (44 feet by 20 feet) is approximately 1/3 the size of a standard court and surrounded by a heavy fence 12 feet (minimum) high. The smaller court size makes it a perfect game for urban settings or anywhere space is limited and the fencing being in play ads to the difficulty and speed of play.

The game its self is played using a paddle with a maximum length of 18 inches. The face of the paddle may have 87 holes of 3/8 of an inch diameter (maximum) in it, this improve the paddles aerodynamics. The ball is similar to a standard tennis ball in construction and size.

Play in Platform Tennis tends to be very quick paced. The rules of play are not very different from regular tennis with two notable exceptions. The fence is in play, as long as the ball rebounding from the fence lands inside the playing area. There is only one serve allowed (except in certain singles play), no first fault second...
